RUSKIN- El mensaje de Cora Simon para sus compañeras del Club de Mujeres de Ruskin, cuando asumió en septiembre sus funciones como presidenta de la organización, fue claro.
"Esto no es un club social, somos abejas obreras poniendo mucha sangre, sudor y lágrimas, y simplemente no te presentas una vez al mes", dijo Simon, de 74 años.
Meses después ella se muestra satisfecha con el trabajo que realizan en equipo en Ruskin, al suroeste del Condado de Hillsborough.
"Las mujeres son fenomenales, nos juntamo, es una locura y nos reímos, es en verdad muy cordial, y hacemos una diferencia en la comunidad", afirmó Simon.
Las edades de las socias del Club oscilan entre 19 y 95 años. Hay más de 60 miembros y sus actividades incluyen entrega de becas y una proyección social no solo a nivel local, sino estatal, nacional e internacional.
La organización se estableció en 1912 y apoya el desarrollo de las oportunidades educativas, culturales y sociales a través del servicio y los recursos de sus miembros.
La casa club es estilo chalet suizo y se incluyó en el Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos en 1974. Tiene amplios jardines y se aprecia al transitar por la arteria principal de Ruskin, en 503 U.S. Hwy 41 South.
La majestuosa vivienda albergó el Ruskin College y fue diseñada por Adaline Dickman Miller, esposa del Dr. George McAnelly Miller, quien fue presidente de la institución educativa que abrió sus puertas de 1910 a 1918. Allí mismo tuvieron también su hogar. La familia traspasó el inmueble al Club en 1940.
La vicepresidenta del Club, Cheryl Deleon, tiene buenas razones para mantenerse activa brindándole servicio a la comunidad.
"Vivo en Ruskin y me interesa Ruskin, y mis hijos fueron a la escuela aquí", afirmó Deleon, de 50 años. "Realmente quería devolver lo recibido, me encanta hacer eso. Pertenezco a múltiples organizaciones, pero realmente me gusta la camaradería y el esfuerzo del grupo de estas mujeres que se reúnen y es tan diverso en edades".
Deleon nació en Estados Unidos. Sus orígenes familiares son de Hungría y Cuba. Es propietaria de D&L Insurance Agency of South Shore, Inc.
Deleon explicó que en diciembre realizaron por primera vez el evento "Pancakes con Santa". Se logró recaudar $600 para el fondo de becas que se otorga a estudiantes de escuelas de secundaria locales para asistir a la universidad o aprender un oficio. Una de ellas es Lennard High School, que, según datos oficiales, los estudiantes hispanos constituyen el 49.90 por ciento para el año escolar 2018-2019.
La presidenta Simon dijo que este año entregarán ocho becas a jóvenes estudiantes, cada una de $1,000. La ceremonia de entrega se realizará en mayo durante un almuerzo anual.
"Además de las becas estamos haciendo otros programas, porque queremos cambiar la vida de las personas y también hacer una diferencia en la comunidad, porque somos bendecidas por vivir aquí, es maravilloso", dijo Simon.
Los fondos que recaudan contribuyen a ayudar a instituciones y organizaciones locales, como las bibliotecas de Ruskin y South Shore, Mary & Martha House, Ruskin Memorial Park, Hacienda Girls Ranch, Canine Companions y otros.
En sus inicios se conoció como el Club de la Mujer del Siglo XX para desarrollar la cultura y el civismo individual. Sus miembros se reunían en sus hogares y comenzaron a trabajar a nivel nacional, estatal y local. En 1940 se cambió el nombre a Club de Mujeres de Ruskin.
Forma parte de la Federación General de Clubes de Mujeres (GFWC, por sus siglas en inglés), que persigue un fin más global, y que se dedica a mejorar la vida de los demás y por consiguiente de la comunidad, a través del servicio voluntario.
"Somos una organización internacional de servicios para las mujeres, la más grande del mundo", dijo Simon. "Estuvimos detrás del movimiento del sufragio para otorgar a las mujeres el derecho a votar en este país, estuvimos detrás de la ley del cinturón de seguridad en los años 70, asientos en vehículos para niños, mucha legislación nacional".
Según el sitio web de GFWC, cuentan con más de 80,000 miembros en clubes afiliados en todos los estados, el Distrito de Columbia y en más de una docena de países.
Los miembros de GFWC también se han asociado a la organización benéfica médica internacional Operación Sonrisa para enviar médicos a todo el mundo y operar de manera gratuita a niños con labio leporino o paladar hendido.
"Les cambia sus vidas y no les cuesta nada, por lo que recaudamos millones [de dólares] para eso", afirmó Simon.
Además, el Club de Mujeres de Ruskin es parte desde 1919 de la Federación de Clubes de Mujeres de Florida (FFWC, por sus siglas en inglés). En sus inicios las integrantes del FFWC trabajaron en iniciativas que llevaron a la aprobación del proyecto de ley sobre trabajo infantil, proyecto de ley de educación obligatoria, entre otros. Joe Zuniga, alcalde honorario de Sun City Center, la comunidad vecina, opinó sobre la importancia del Club.
"Es una excelente manera para que las mujeres y los líderes se organicen y trabajen juntos", dijo Zuniga.
La comunidad de Ruskin fue fundada el 7 de agosto de 1908 y su nombre es en honor al escritor y reformador social británico John Ruskin.
