Dos días de festividades inaugurales estaban en marcha el lunes por la mañana en el frío de Tallahassee, comenzando con un desayuno ceremonial en honor a las líderes femeninas de la Florida que contó con la presencia de la Vicegobernadora Jeanette Núñez y la primera dama entrante Casey DeSantis.
Nuñez, que es la mujer hispana de más alto rango en la historia del estado, habló sobre recibir la llamada telefónica del gobernador electo Ron DeSantis, cuando le pidió que fuera su compañera de carrera poco después de ganar la primaria republicana. Después de que los límites de los períodos la obligaron a retirarse de la Cámara de Representantes del estado, dijo que estaba esperando una "pausa" de la política y que estaba considerando una candidatura al Senado estatal en 2020.
"Parece que mis planes ahora han cambiado", dijo Núñez, para reírse desde la multitud. "No podría haber estado más orgullosa de estar junto a (DeSantis) y recorrer nuestro estado extraordinario".
Núñez, quien es ampliamente admirada por su información privilegiada en ambos partidos, fue crucial para que la campaña ganara terreno entre los votantes de Cuba y el sur de la Florida.
Ella habló de manera amplia sobre su visión de la reforma de la atención médica, el aumento de las opciones de elección de escuelas, la protección del medio ambiente y la mejora del transporte y la infraestructura de la Florida, pero hasta el momento ofreció pocos detalles.
Contrariamente a la tradición, el gobernador saliente Rick Scott nombró a más de 70 personas para juntas y comités en toda Florida el viernes, lo que algunos consideraron un reproche a la autoridad de DeSantis.
Cuando se le preguntó si la nueva administración anularía cualquiera de esas citas, Núñez solo diría que "lo analizarán", pero agregó que no tenían un "plan definitivo".
Asistieron al evento varias de las principales mujeres líderes de la Florida, tanto de la administración de Rick Scott como de los líderes entrantes, entre ellos la procuradora general electa Ashley Moody, la presidenta de la Junta de Educación del Estado, Marva Johnson, la directora de comunicaciones de la administración entrante, Helen Aguirre Ferré, comisionada de Agricultura. Eligen a Nikki Fried y Simone Marstiller, la reciente elección de DeSantis para dirigir el Departamento de Justicia Juvenil.
Varios oradores también elogiaron a otra mujer crucial para la campaña: Susie Wiles, que ha manejado tanto la campaña como la transición.
Casey DeSantis, quien también habló, dijo que la Primera Familia estaba en el proceso de mudarse a la Mansión del Gobernador, que debía ser a prueba de bebés para sus dos hijos, Madison y Mason (ambos menores de 2 años).
"Estaba pensando en ese hermoso papel tapiz de principios del siglo XX. El crayón naranja no se vería tan bien sobre ese papel", dijo a los periodistas después del evento. "Queremos asegurarnos de que las personas tengan la oportunidad de ver crecer a dos niños pequeños en la mansión; esta es la primera vez que sucede en 50 años".
En medio del aplauso de la celebración y la sensación de sangre fresca, Casey DeSantis tuvo un mensaje central, que ofreció con lágrimas a los voluntarios y simpatizantes: "No los decepcionaremos".
