"La Catrina al muerto se va a llevar, pero en la fiesta se va a quedar".
Para esta época del año cuando las casas las decoran con fantasmas y el comercio se llena de dulces me gusta recordarles a mis lectores dos conceptos culturales: La Catrina y el Halloween
La Catrina proviene de la cultura mexicana. Tiene sus inicios en la crítica a la sociedad nacionalista del Siglo XIX y es un símbolo del Día de Muertos.
Además, la Catrina simboliza el mestizaje y la manera de cómo nos reímos de la muerte en una fecha tan especial y única que solo en México se puede celebrar con tan espectacular producción.
En ese personaje se refleja toda la riqueza de un folclor sin límites, único.
Su nombre original era La Calavera Garbancera, palabra con la que se conocía a las personas que vendían garbanzo y que tenían sangre indígena, pero que pretendían ser europeos.
La Catrina es un ícono que a manera de caricatura nos recuerda que tarde o temprano tendremos un encuentro con ella, lo que representará el fin de nuestra vida. El caricaturista José Guadalupe Posada fue el precursor de esta representación.

Halloween: "All Hallow's Eve", traduce literalmente en español “víspera de todos los santos".
Aquí en Estados Unidos la fiesta de Halloween se celebra con mucha fuerza aun cuando el origen de esta viene de Europa. Una fiesta sajona de terror y algo de humor.
Se originó en un festival céltico de nombre Samhain. Los celtas vivieron hace más de dos mil años en lo que ahora es Irlanda. Para los celtas, en la noche antes del año nuevo los límites entre el mundo de los vivos y los muertos se encuentran, creyendo así posible que los espíritus regresan a la Tierra. Los Druidas, sacerdotes celtas, creían que la presencia de los espíritus les permitía hacer predicciones.
Los celtas comenzaron a usar disfraces y encender velas, fogatas, para alejar los espíritus. Los disfraces por lo general eran elaborados para vestir las cabezas y la piel de algún animal, a efecto de alejar a los espíritus que vagaban. Fue el papa Gregorio III quien nombró el primero de noviembre como un día para honrar a todos los santos y mártires. Esta festividad incorporo algunas tradiciones de Samhain la tarde antes de Halloween llegando a pasar de un evento secular y basado en juegos infantiles como se le conoce hoy.
De acuerdo con la historia esta tradición llego a Estados Unidos con la migración de irlandeses que huían de la gran hambruna de 1846.
